Parades New Orleans Style
Parades in New Orleans aren’t just parades, they are all out extravaganzas. In 2003 I marched in the Gay Easter Parade along with the members of The MCC (Metropolitan Community Church) of Greater New Orleans, and it took us 3 ½ hours to complete the route. The route began on North Rampart and ended on North Rampart, continued on around to Jackson Square and though not sure but I think we went through Bourbon Street. People were lined up three, four and five lines deep on both sides of the streets in one unbroken line from beginning to end with huge floats galore in record numbers in every conceivable size, shape and description.
Although the Marti Gras’s parades are the most widely recognized and participated in, New Orleans has several minor parades throughout the year. I had wanted to participate in the Gay Pride and Southern Decadence parades, however I left shortly before June. Participates are either invited to be part of the parade or request to be a part of it, MCC was invited along with several other church’s in the French Quarter.
The MCC and I were tossing out chocolate Easter Bunnies. My friend Courtney who passed away shortly before Katrina once told me, people in New Orleans would have a parade at the drop of a hat, all they needed was someone to say it was a good excuse for a parade. When Charlene, the acknowledged mother of the church ran out of chocolate bunnies to throw she put the basket on top of her head and made an Easter bonnet of out it. Although she didn’t win any prizes for it in the MCC’ s best Easter bonnet contest, it still got a few laughs from the church members.
Now people I want you to know it’s a real, real good idea to take care of your private business in the privy before participating in any New Orleans parades, because you will flat out not have a chance to after it begins and stay away from liquids. I carried my video camera and phone camera along, my video camera though was having battery problems and was almost useless. If you’re a heavy sweater in hot muggy weather like me it’s a good idea to take along a washcloth, or some other type of small towel because you’ll need it. New Orleans is notorious for hot muggy weather even in the springtime of the year.
